Our Current Events class recently studied the topic of food deserts. These are rural areas with limited access to fresh food. This causes many of these areas to rely on processed pre-cooked food as a substitute. What can be healthy substitutes, rather than processed "junk"? Our students were challenged to find out. Each student was responsible for making a "fresh food" item - no boxed meals, no pre-cooked meat, etc. The students nailed it! We had items like fresh asparagus, fruit salad, cajun chicken bites, chicken sliders, tomato/cucumber salad, freshly squeezed lemonade, and fresh veggies for dipping.
Great job! It was definitely a yummy learning day!

SCIENCE FAIR!!!!!!!

Attention 2023-24 Players and Parents!
There will be an informational meeting Thursday May 11th 6:30 pm at the KC Hall in Hardin for all students interested in playing football for the 2023 season. This meeting is for all current 8th graders, freshman, sophomores and juniors from any school in our county! At this meeting we will discuss the summer activities, go over the schedule and talk about expectations for the summer.
We encourage any and all parents that would like to receive the information directly to come.
We also want to encourage any student that is thinking about playing but is unsure to come to the meeting. This is a great time to ask questions based on the concerns your family may have about the sport and our program. We will be bringing in some of our equipment to help alleviate any concerns over just how safe your son will be while playing.
Our Coaching Staff looks forward to all 2023 football players in the same building for the first time this year!
Go Warriors!

On April 13th Mary Baalman, Morgan Klaas, Jerica LaMarsh and Emma Vogel received the Silver Medallion Award and were recognized at the Silver Medallion Academic Excellence Banquet at Lewis and Clark Community College. This specific award recognizes seniors within the top 8 percent of their graduating classes. Congratulations to these four exceptional students who always set the bar high and make us here at BHS very proud!

Every year the General George Rogers Clark Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) sponsors an Outstanding Citizenship Award for deserving seniors from area high schools. This prestigious award is designed to honor outstanding seniors who exemplify good citizenship and who are imbued with such qualities as leadership, cooperation, dependability, congeniality, community involvement, and patriotism. Mary Baalman was selected by BHS faculty and was honored in a ceremony that was held on April 20th. Congratulations Mary and thank you for being such a great role model for other students within the district!

On Monday we kept BHS alum Dr. Melissa Schleeper-Kiel busy! After she talked to our Health Careers class about her career in ophthalmology, she then went into the 7th and 8th grade class to help with dissecting a cow eye. During the dissection Dr. Schleeper-Kiel explained the different parts of the eye and how each part worked. Thank you for spending a good chunk of your morning with us, it was a real EYE opener!!!

The rain held off and the 3rd & 4th graders enjoyed a field trip to Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge. Ranger Bob led us on an informative outdoor adventure. As part of the "Every Kid Outdoors" program, the 4th graders also received a season pass to access all National Parks.

Every year IHSA allows each member school to nominate one male and one female athlete to their All-State Academic Team. This year, over 500 nominations were received from IHSA member schools. To qualify for nomination, students had to be a senior, possess a minimum 3.50 GPA, have participated in at least two IHSA sponsored sports or activities during each of the last two years, and demonstrated outstanding citizenship. Though we did not have any male athletes who met this criteria, we had a few female athletes who did. Of those, Morgan Klaas was selected by BHS faculty as the embodiment of what it means to be a student athlete. Morgan participated in Volleyball, Cheerleading, and Scholastic Bowl all 4 years of high school and is one of the Valedictorians of her class. Despite the commitment being a student athlete requires, Morgan has worked hard to ensure she is successful both in the classroom and within her teams. Congratulations Morgan Klaas on your IHSA All-State Academic Team nomination and thank you for being a role model to all student athletes.

A big thank you to BHS alum Dr. Melissa Schleeper-Kiel who came to speak to our Health Careers course about her career in opthalmology. It makes us proud to see our past students succeeding in life and coming back to encourage our current students!

The JCH Clinic in Hardin is offering school physicals from 3-7 today for all Brussels CUSD 42 and Calhoun CUSD 40 students! The Calhoun Health Department will also be there for immunizations! You don't have to be a patient. No appointment is needed - Walk in from 3-7.

5th and 6th have been studying Hitler, Nazi's and the concentration camps of WW11. We have been tracking both my Grandfather's units as they were both in The Battle of the Bulge. 4TH ID (Patton's 3rd Army) and 605th Tanker Batallion. This statue was found by Richard Prough in a demolished house in Holland as his unit made their way across the Netherlands and Northern Germany. Next week, I am bringing a Purple Heart awarded to Clifford Alexander. We are on ch 5 of Number the Stars and have just started discussing Anne Frank and how she and her sister both died in the Bergen-Belsen prison work camp from Typhoid. The kids are shocked and appalled, as am I, but I love teaching Geography and History and learning along with my students. ALOT of doom and gloom but even the bad parts of History need taught to younger generations to raise awareness and keep it from happening again. On a brighter note Happy Easter.

We can't wait for our first annual Science Fair and Science Night on April 27th. Students participating in the Science Fair can set up at 6:00 in the cafeteria and judging will start at 6:30. The Science Night portion will be set up in the high school as an open house format from 6-8 pm. Everyone is welcome to come to the Science Night, even if you are not a Brussels student. We have several groups coming out that evening with educational activities, so come out and do science with us!

We had a beautiful day for an egg hunt on Tuesday afternoon! Thank you to the BHS Civics Club members for helping out and providing eggs for the students. Also a big thanks to the students for donating canned goods for St. Vincent DePaul. Happy Spring everyone!!

Aubrey was our in house experiment expert today with challenging our taste buds and our noses with a blindfolded food experiment. After Science we celebrated finishing our state assessment testing this week with Shrek 2 and some snacks.

Don't forget! The Civics Club will be sponsoring an egg hunt for BGS and SMS students (PreK-6) on Tuesday, April 4th in the Brussels Town Park. Please have your kiddos bring a canned food item in their baskets to donate to St. Vincent DePaul. Happy Spring!!

On Tuesday, grades K-6 enjoy a pizza and ice cream party they earned by reaching their reading goal of 500 books. Each class participated by reading books and keeping track using a visual display. Working with Mrs. Michele they set goals and reached each goal set. The students have decided to continue to keep track until the end of the year. Total books read so far 576!

Our Brussels National Honor Society members helped out with our annual canned food drive, along with our local Girl Scouts. This is an annual project that we do each spring. Our Girl Scouts and NHS members take different routes and place bags and then one week later pick up any canned food or dry food items people would like to donate. This year’s donations went to the SVDP food center. The group collected over 2800 food items and helped restock a depleted center.
Great job to all who helped place the donation bags and those who helped sort and collect the items.
Way to go BHS NHS and the Girls Scouts!

Today 1st & 2nd grade took a virtual field trip to learn about Legos and play to learn. The Lego team showed what they do when they need help to think through a problem or get their creativity flowing. They make paper airplanes! Kaylee led the class by teaching them how to make one design of a plane then Miss Steward showed them another design. We also read about the first female Master Lego Builder at New York's Lego Land.
